Sullivan’s Island is both an island and a small town located in Charleston County. This South Carolina community is home to about 2,000 residents and is seated at the entrance of the Charleston Harbor. Sullivan’s Island is located on the Atlantic Ocean, and its borders include Charleston Harbor, the Intracoastal Waterway, Swinton Creek, and Breach Inlet. Historically, Sullivan’s Island was the entry point for about 160,000 enslaved Africans that were brought to British North America and was also home to Fort Moultrie.
Despite being a small community, there are several things to see and do in Sullivan’s Island. History enthusiasts will want to hit a few important destinations, including the Fort Moultrie National Monument and Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse. Outdoor recreation is popular at Sullivan’s Island Beach and Sealand Adventure Sports. Other notable attractions in the area include the Edgar Allan Poe Library and the Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church.
Sullivan’s Island and the rest of the region are situated within a humid subtropical climate zone with unique weather conditions, and it is important that residents are prepared for varied weather conditions throughout the year. During the summer months, a central air conditioning system is a necessity, as the weather tends to be hot, humid, and wet. While average daily highs reach the upper-80s, temperatures in the 90s are not uncommon. Without a central air conditioning system, dangerous conditions indoors could result.
